Ryan decided to take everyone to a fair two towns away and make it a surprise. He remembered how much Stephanie and the kids loved going. There was no doubt this was the perfect first trip with everyone together. Willow was acquainted with the locals at the bar, which would show her the wide variety of people who lived in other towns. Nothing could go wrong with this plan. He even bought clown masks for everyone to wear.

Martha and the twins cheered upon hearing that. All three loved the idea of going to a fair and exploring all the sights. While their town had a movie theater and a mall, most in the house preferred watching shows at home. The twins liked the mall, but after Kate dashed off multiple times and got lost twice, Ryan kept those kinds of trips to a minimum. Especially after Stephanie died—he couldn’t think of the pain of losing anyone else.

Willow, however, was more subdued, saying she would like to see what fairs in the area were like. She dressed casually in a T-shirt and jeans, far from her usual attire.

Ryan pushed down his wariness and focused on showing everyone a fun time. Who didn’t like going to fairs besides uppity folks? Perhaps not every one of them was that way. But most folks he knew liked these events. People could interact, enjoy themselves, and support many small businesses that set up stalls there.

Upon reaching the fair, the place was full of activity. Martha and the twins wanted to try everything, and Ryan had a whole itinerary ready. He started by taking everyone on multiple rides and viewing the animals performing tricks and clowns doing funny gags.

“Can we move? I, um… well, it’s sort of embarrassing, but I have a…” Willow paused, literally going white with obvious fear at the sight of a clown about twenty feet away. She cleared her throat, offering him an apologetic smile. “I have a deep-seated fear of clowns.”

Ryan couldn’t believe his error. In planning this outing, he didn’t consider Willow’s taste. I’m an idiot. That’s why she’s been so cagey.

“It’s okay. If you’re scared, I’ll hold your hand,” Emily said and hugged Willow. She was a precious child who could turn any situation around.

“Thank you, honey,” Willow said, “I think I’ll be fine if we don’t go to any actual clown shows. I might have a heart attack if I get stuck within their proximity, and at least on the outside, I can move around. People love clowns here,” she added, flinching as a few people decked out in clown memorabilia walked by.

Ryan took a moment to refund three tickets to clown stage shows. One was non-refundable, and he had to absorb that loss. The only show that didn’t have a clown was the petting zoo, and it was set up for children who feared clowns. Martha and Willow loved petting the baby goats and piglets. He thought the whole setup was sweet, but the twins were bored.

“I want to see a cool show, not watch smelly animals,” Emily mumbled.
